Friends,

On December 31, an unexpected tragedy occured when our friend Corp. Dan Shriner's life was ended, memories, laughs and years before we all imagined. We will remember Dan for the strength, heart, and drive he exuded on a daily basis and for always being there when others asked, through thick and thin. This unfortunate event was caused by a heart attack, which Dan suffered at his gym. He had simply been running on a treadmill when this tragedy occured. Following the heart attack, the paramedics nor the emergency room doctors had time to revive him.

Dan entered most of our lives in Fall 1999, when he pledged Delt after transferring to University of Maryland. He bounced around between several off-campus houses before having the chance to move into the fraternity house his Jr year, when most people got to know Dan. Dan took great pride in his work with the house and served as Pledge Director and later developed a pledge bonding hiking trip, which I believe was regarded as one of the best events of the year. Having pledged with Dan, I had the chance to become very close with him throughout the years, particularly when we lived in a second floor double in the house and then when 8 of us lived in 9310 Rhode Island Avenue.

On Feb 13 2003, several of us hosted a going away party for Dan, when he went on to help defend our country in Iraq. Dan trained for this opportunity for 7 years leading up to this point and no one including Dan believed that he would be going off to war. I still remember the night months prior to this, when Dan told us there would be a good chance he would be going and all of us were in complete disbelief, but knew there are only few people who are mentally and physically strong enough to do this and Dan Shriner surely was one of these people. After arriving in Iraq, Dan along with his 4th LAR 3rd Platoon unit spent months supporting our country, sleeping in the middle of the desert on non-air conditioned sand, with temperatures reaching 140 degrees, dealing with dangerous and blinding sand storms and the annoyance of sand fleas, which left soldiers minimum sleep. Nonetheless, Dan rarely complained about these conditions or post-college lives that many of us were living.

After war, Dan came back to the Maryland area working a civilian job and eventually moved into a great place near Columbia, MD with his dog and his soon-to-be wife, Tiffin. For those of you who have never met Tiffin, she is a bright, beautiful, caring girl from Annapolis who wanted nothing else in the world but to spend the rest of her life with Dan. That become a step truer when they married in July 2008 on the Maryland Eastern Shore on a perfect summer's day.

What I'm realizing now is the worst part about death is trying to figure out what a support group can possibly do for a best friends' widow who wants nothing in her life but her husband back.

I'm sure all of you have your memories of our great friend Dan Shriner and I would appreciate it if you would all say a prayer for Dan's parents, brother and sister, and especially his wife Tiffin. Please find details for the funeral below and I look forward to seeing you there.
